M. Scalese
Chief of the Nonbeverage Products Laboratory
Janet M. Scalese is the Chief of the Nonbeverage
Products Laboratory in the Scientific Services
Division of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and
Trade Bureau. Ms. Scalese oversees the work
of chemists and support personnel in three areas:
Nonbeverage Drawback Alcohol, Specially Denatured
Alcohol (SDA) and Tobacco.
Ms. Scalese joined the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco
and Firearms (ATF) in 1983 as a chemist in the
Beverage Alcohol Laboratory. After several months
of employment, she moved to the Nonbeverage
Products Laboratory as part of the Laboratory’s
cross-training program. She worked as a chemist
processing formulas and analyzing samples submitted
for SDA and drawback of tax. In that capacity,
she had daily contact with industry representatives.
Ms. Scalese continues to have extensive contact
with industry members and possesses in-depth
knowledge of industry practices and manufacturing
processes. She recognizes the importance of
customer service and was the principle author
of two customer service plans. As a result of
an innovative partnership with the regulated
industry resulting in a symposium at the Institute
of Food Technologists Annual Meeting, Ms. Scalese
was named Laboratory Services Employee of the
Year in 1996. In October 2002, she was selected
to be the Laboratory Chief. She continues to
stress the importance of customer service and
improving the relationship between government
and industry. In addition to the TTB responsibilities,
her Laboratory continues to support ATF in investigations
involving authentication of tobacco products
and diversion of SDA.
Ms. Scalese holds an A.B. degree from the College
of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. |
