TTB Increases Outreach at Unified Wine and Grape Symposium

TTB Increases Outreach to Industry Members and Public at Unified Wine and Grape SymposiumTTB employees participated in the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, California in late January. The symposium is one of the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere with more than 13,000 attendees and nearly 650 vendors and exhibitors providing supplies, services, assistance and information about the wine industry, viticulture, and enology.

"The symposium covers three major areas of the wine industry: winemaking, grape growing, and branding—including public relations and finance," said TTB Wine Trade and Technical Advisor Mari Kirrane. "TTB is often invited to make a presentation covering various topics from how to enter the wine industry, to compliance, labeling, and international issues."

This year Kirrane presented on the process for adding new wine treating materials to our regulations.
Kirrane identified the target audience for this session as potential members of the wine industry, current members of the industry (winemakers, lab personnel, cellar workers, marketing personnel), grape growers who want to have wine made for them (custom crush), and chemical suppliers interested in introducing new treating materials or processes to the U.S. market.

TTB also staffed a booth on the trade show floor. This year, approximately 200 people visited our booth for information on all areas of our regulation of the wine industry.

"Many visitors expressed appreciation that we had a presence at the show with knowledgeable personnel available to answer questions and provide guidance," said TTB Investigator Vickie Brennan. "Some of the topics we covered with visitors ranged from questions on how to start a winery to questions on Certificate of Label Approvals, formulas, recordkeeping and reporting, and importing and exporting distilled spirits."

Kirrane explained that the booth is an important part of TTB’s efforts to foster working relationships with industry members and the public.

"Having informed permittees certainly helps promote the collection of taxes and voluntary compliance," she said. "TTB's participation at the event helps promote the Department of Treasury’s efforts to enhance U.S. competitiveness, collecting the revenue and promoting voluntary compliance."
