IN THIS ISSUE

Greetings! We hope you had a star-spangled and patriotic week! This week's top stories include an announcement about the availability of new FAQs on sugar content statements, information about the reaccreditation of our laboratories, another installment in our Who We Are and What We Do series, plus a list of the past week's top Tobacco pages at TTB.gov/.

TTB PUBLISHES NEW FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON SUGAR CONTENT STATEMENTS

On July 1, 2014, we posted a new set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about sugar content statements on alcohol beverage labels and in advertisements. These new FAQs clarify that, since sugar is a type of carbohydrate, any sugar content statement is a carbohydrate claim and must be consistent with the guidance for carbohydrate representations (see TTB Ruling 2004-1 and TTB Ruling 2013-2).

TTB LABORATORIES RECEIVE ISO 17025 RE-ACCREDITATION

The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), an international organization for standardization (ISO) accreditation body in the United States, renewed the ISO 17025 accreditation of TTB's laboratories for another two years. Currently, our Beverage Alcohol Laboratory, Tobacco Laboratory, and the Compliance Laboratory are ISO 17025 accredited.

We first received ISO accreditation in 2007, and since then have successfully maintained our accreditation. ISO 17025 accreditation is a third-party verification of a laboratory's management system and competence. It's an important standard for calibration and testing laboratories around the world, and such an accreditation demonstrates that our laboratories are technically competent and able to produce precise and accurate test and/or calibration data.
