TTB ESTABLISHES TIP OF THE MITT AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREA

On Thursday, July 21, 2016, we published a final rule in the Federal Register establishing the 2,760-square-mile Tip of the Mitt American viticultural area (AVA), in the northern portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The Tip of the Mitt AVA is not within any other viticultural area.

We issued this regulation in response to a petition submitted on behalf of local vineyard and winery owners by the Straits Area Grape Growers Association.  We designate viticultural areas to allow vintners to better describe the origin of their wines and to allow consumers to better identify wines they may purchase.

This final rule will be effective on August 22, 2016.

See Docket No. TTB–2015–0011 at Regulations.gov/ for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.

Comments are due by October 27, 2016.
