IN THIS ISSUE

Greetings! This week's top news includes the results of our 2016 Alcohol Beverage Sampling Program and information about changes that can be made to approved alcohol beverage labels that don't require a new COLA.

2016 ALCOHOL BEVERAGE SAMPLING PROGRAM RESULTS

TTB's Alcohol Beverage Sampling Program (ABSP) is a random survey of products in the marketplace where we:

  • Verify that the labels on alcohol beverages contain adequate descriptive information,
  • Confirm that the labels are not likely to mislead consumers, and
  • Determine where compliance issues exist.

Each year we purchase products from the marketplace and bring them to our offices for label assessments, where we first evaluate them for compliance with our labeling regulations. Following the label assessments, we send the products to our laboratories for a series of chemical analyses to assess whether the products themselves comply with the information displayed on the product labels.

CHANGES TO PREVIOUSLY APPROVED ALCOHOL BEVERAGE LABELS THAT DON'T REQUIRE A NEW COLA

Once your label receives TTB approval, you are allowed to change certain items on that label without submitting a new Application for and Certification/Exemption of Label/Bottle Approval, or COLA (TTB Form 5100.31).

If you are considering making changes to previously approved labels, please review the complete list of allowable revisions before you submit your COLA application—you may not need to send us the revised labels at all!
