Mary G. Ryan serves as the Administrator for the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). In this capacity, Ms. Ryan oversees the collection of approximately $20 billion per year in federal alcohol, tobacco, and firearms and ammunition excise taxes, as well as the permit systems and regulations established for those industries under the authority of the Internal Revenue Code and the Federal Alcohol Administration Act.
Ms. Ryan began her career in the federal government in 1991, serving in a variety of professional and leadership capacities within TTB and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Prior to her appointment as TTB Administrator, Ms. Ryan served as TTB’s Deputy Administrator from 2010 – 2019, when she was named Acting Administrator. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Administrator for Field Operations from 2005 -2010, and as Deputy Chief Counsel from 2003 - 2005. Prior to joining TTB, Ms. Ryan was Deputy Associate Chief Counsel for alcohol and tobacco in ATF.
Ms. Ryan graduated from Georgetown University and Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. She was a law clerk in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and is a member of the Maryland bar and the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Ms. Ryan is a recipient of the Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service.
