TTB Establishes the Petaluma Gap Viticultural Area

Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, December 7, 2017, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) will publish a final rule in Federal Register establishing the approximately 202,476-acre "Petaluma Gap" American viticultural area (27 CFR 9.261) in portions of Sonoma and Marin Counties in California.
In this final rule, TTB is also modifying the boundary of the larger existing North Coast viticultural area (27 CFR 9.30) so that it entirely encompasses the new AVA. In addition, the Sonoma County portion of the Petaluma Gap AVA will overlap with the existing Sonoma Coast viticultural area (27 CFR 9.116).
TTB is issuing this regulation in response to a petition submitted on behalf of the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance. TTB designates viticultural areas to allow vintners to better describe the origin of their wines and to allow consumers to better identify wines they may purchase.
This final rule will be effective on January 8, 2018. The public may view the relevant rulemaking documents and the public comments received regarding the Petaluma Gap viticultural area on the "Regulations.gov" website within Docket No. TTB–2016–0009.
