The maximum penalty for filing false federal excise tax returns is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. |
On Wednesday, October 31, 2012, a 66-year-old Cottage Grove, Oregon man pleaded guilty to filing 70 false excise tax returns during a three-year period, even though he collected the taxes from his clients, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon.
William Myers admitted to filing false returns for his company, the Side Pocket Food Company, in the amount of $879,000, between October 1, 2008, and August 31, 2011. As a licensed distilled spirits plant, Myers' company was required to file federal excise tax returns with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and to pay federal excise taxes to TTB.
TTB investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford is prosecuting the case.
